CELEBRATION OF THE DAY OF AFRICAN CHILD ON JUNE 18, 2019 AT TOM MBOYA SCHOOL OF CHILDREN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY IN MOMBASA COUNTY
Sheilah Sheldone Arts for Social Change (SSASC) CBO teamed up with the teachers of Tom Mboya Cerebral Palsy on June 18, 2019 to observe the Day of African Child whose theme is “Humanitarian Action in Africa: Children’s Rights First.”
The celebrations were attended by over 100 participants including girls, boys, teachers, parents, and community members. The event started with canvas and face painting demonstrations by Sheilah Sheldone. This was followed with Poems, Songs, dance and skit inspiring the community to provide opportunities for children with special needs to realize their potential.
Speaking at the event, SSASC representative Zacharia Kazungu noted that children with special needs in the county are faced with myriad challenges such as stigma, lack of appropriate treatment, financial and caring burdens. In addition, the day to day care of children who suffer from cerebral palsy can be so demanding that it is virtually impossible to keep a regular nanny. Mothers are frustrated into quitting their jobs to care for their baby fulltime. “All children need to be given equal opportunities without any discrimination based on their ability.” Kazungu Said.
Kazungu encouraged the parents to ensure that children with special needs are given opportunity to pursue their education and all children are registered immediately with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) after assessment. He added that SSASC will continue working in partnership with all duty bearers, child centred organizations and the community as a whole in ensuring that all children have equal access to their rights without any discrimination.

SHEILAH’S ROLE IN HELPING THE PHYSICAL DISABLED IN SOCIETY
INTRODUCTION
Sheilah Sheldone Arts for Social Change CBO was founded by community members in Mombasa county to support the dreams of a child prodigy, Sheilah Sheldone Charles to impact on the lives of children suffering from neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) in her community through creative work. Neurodevelopmental disorders include; autism spectrum disorders, down syndrome, as well as cerebral palsy. Sheilah is 10 years old. She is a great painter, a model, a poet, and a designer.
CONTEXT
Sheilah Sheldone Arts for Social Change CBO recognizes that neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) compromise the development and attainment of full social and economic potential at individual, family, community, and country levels. Globally, one in 160 children has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to the World Health Organization. In Kenya, an estimate 3 in 100 children are living with cerebral palsy. A study done by Gona et al (2017) on challenges and coping strategies of parents of children with autism on the Kenyan coast, showed that parents of children with autism experience common challenges including stigma, lack of appropriate treatment, financial and caring burdens. In addition, the day to day care of children who suffer from cerebral palsy can be so demanding that it is virtually impossible to keep a regular nanny. Mothers are frustrated into quitting their jobs to care for their baby fulltime. It is therefore Sheilah’s dream to work with families of children with neurodevelopmental disorders through her Artistry.
